How to play
Super Cube is a rhythm survival game played on the outside of a cube. Walls close in on its cells and land on the beat. You step from cell to cell, rolling the cube when you walk off an edge, and try to stand on an open cell every time the walls come down. It never stops speeding up, so your score is simply how long you last.
Controls
- Touch: swipe in any direction to step one cell. Keep your finger down and swipe again for the next step.
- Keyboard: arrow keys or W A S D. Space or Enter starts a run.
- Walk off an edge and the cube rolls onto the next face. If you press a step while it rolls, that step happens the moment the roll ends.
- Directions are relative to the screen, even when the view starts to wobble and spin later on.
Reading the board
- A cell that is about to be hit shows a frame whose walls close in. When they meet, the walls have landed.
- Every pattern is checked to be survivable from where you could be standing, assuming you move quickly enough. The assumed speed rises as the game goes on.
- Warnings get shorter, landings come closer together and the tempo climbs from 124 BPM. Some patterns come in streaks: strobes that alternate like a checkerboard, and rolls that leave only one neighbouring face open.
Ranks
Your rank names how far you got: Vertex, then Edge at 10 seconds, Face at 20, Cube at 30, Tesseract at 45, and on through Penteract, Hexeract, Hepteract, Octeract and Enneract up to Dekeract at 140 seconds.
The leaderboard is verified
When you press Play, the server hands out a fresh random seed for your run. Your browser records only the moves you make and when you make them, measured in 1/240ths of a second. When the run ends, the server replays those moves with the same game code and works out your time itself. It also checks that the real time that passed matches the time you survived, so slowed-down games and runs computed in advance are rejected. A score typed into the browser never reaches the leaderboard.
Because the real time is checked, a ranked run can't be paused. If you switch tabs or apps mid-run, the run ends there and isn't submitted.
If the leaderboard can't be reached, you still play normally. The run just isn't ranked, and the game-over screen says so.
Accounts
You don't need to sign up. The first time you play, you get an anonymous account on this device. After your first verified run you can pick a name for the leaderboard. To keep your account if you clear your browser data, or to use it on another device, use Save your account and link a Google account.
Accessibility
If your device asks for reduced motion, the beat pulse, background spin and lens wobble are turned off. The game itself plays the same. Sound can be switched off with the button in the corner during a run.
